API changes set to take place next week

On Wednesday the 1st of February, Twitter announced that 'free' access to its API will soon be transitioning to a paid service model, rather shockingly, as soon as the 9th of February (giving very little time for users to react).

This means that beyond next Thursday, free access to Twitter's data and features will no longer be available to a plethora of third-party tools, unless that is, you are subscribed to their (soon to be announced) paid tiers.

If Twitter's free API currently plays a significant role from a functionality perspective on your website, e.g. through the use of an embedded Twitter feed, you may find it no longer works by Friday next week.

What has Twitter said so far?

As of right now, Twitter has yet to provide clarity regarding the exact pricing models they plan to introduce, however, their official Twitter account has highlighted:

More details on what you can expect next week.” (more details now available).

From what we know so far, the decision to remove free access to Twitter’s API follows the platform updating its developer rules, banning third-party clients, causing popular third-party Twitter applications to abandon the platform.
